About the Shia Islamic calendar

The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar of twelve months — Muharram, Safar, Rabi-ul-Awwal, Rabi-us-Sani, Jamadi-ul-Awwal, Jamadi-us-Sani, Rajab, Shaban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Zil-Qaad, Zil-Hajj — and is about eleven days shorter than the Gregorian year, so every occasion moves earlier each year. Dates here are calculated using the Umm al-Qura method; your local moon sighting may differ by a day. The first two months, Muharram and Safar, carry the Ayyam-e-Aza commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (a.s) and his companions at Karbala, observed across Azadari Media with nohay, marsiya and majlis from reciters worldwide.
